Hurray for SuSE 10.2

February 19, 2007

I’ve never hid my enthusiasm for Linux. My favourite distribution by far has been SuSE. There were a few rough spots when Novell took over but in general I’ve been happy with the direction that SuSE goes. One observation that I’ve made is that SuSE tends to make more of an effort to integrate into a Microsoft Windows centric world. Microsoft has a gigantic share of the OS market and because of this it is obvious that there are going to be a good deal of Microsoft based networks. As experience can tell, the world isn’t crashing down the Linux door asking to be let in. There is however a keen interest on trying out Linux and many that do have found themselves pleasently surprised. I believe much of the success and acceptance of Linux in the modern world will stem from general acceptance that Linux can work well with existing frameworks. SuSE has been making vast strides to accomplishing this.

I’ve been waiting for the right moment to try out OpenSuSE 10.2. One of my long anticipated features has at last arrived. OpenSuSE 10.2 will allow you to join the OS to an existing Windows Domain during installation without having to go through significant tweeks and modifications and how-to scripts. Not only that, simply enough it will also allow for authentication through your Windows Domain too. This means that I can install a SuSE Linux box on a Windows Domain and have it behave on the network as well has other systems on the domain.

I love it.
